Creative Paper Tasmania Experience
Looking for a hands-on, creative experience in Tasmania? Step inside a working paper mill, roll up your sleeves, and make your own handmade paper while discovering the art, creativity, and sustainability behind every sheet. Perfect for families, travellers, and anyone who loves to create, Creative Paper Tasmania is a must-visit on the North West Coast.
At Creative Paper Tasmania, visitors of all ages can explore the fascinating world of handmade paper. Learn traditional papermaking techniques while creating your own sheet in a fun, interactive environment.
The highlight of your visit is our 30-minute guided papermaking tour, where you go behind the scenes of Australia’s largest handmade paper mill. This is no passive demonstration — you’ll actively take part in every step. Learn how pulp is prepared, fibres are suspended in water, and sheets of paper are formed using traditional moulds and deckles. Dip your mould into the vat, lift your sheet, and watch the fibres settle into a delicate layer — the first step in creating your very own handmade paper.
Making paper by hand is tactile, creative, and surprisingly satisfying. Visitors leave amazed at how enjoyable it is to craft something unique while learning techniques that have been used for centuries. Every sheet carries subtle variations, making each piece truly one-of-a-kind.
Sustainability is at the heart of Creative Paper Tasmania. Handmade paper has always been about recycling fibres, and we continue that tradition by transforming waste materials and by-products into beautiful papers. By giving these materials a second life, we reduce waste while producing papers that are environmentally responsible and creatively inspiring.
We work with a wide variety of fibres to create papers with different textures, colours, and strengths. Recycled cotton, hemp, linen, and plant fibres form the base for many sheets. More unusual fibres — Apples, Native leaves, Huon Pine shavings, Wombat poo, and even Koala poo — add texture and character. These unexpected materials showcase the versatility of natural fibres and produce papers with fascinating stories behind them.
Every sheet is handmade using traditional techniques, so no two are ever the same. Some are smooth and strong, perfect for artists and printmakers; others are textured and unique, ideal for crafts, stationery, bookbinding, and creative design projects. Creative Paper Tasmania also works with other industries, producing specialty papers and experimenting with new fibres to push the boundaries of traditional papermaking.
While at the mill, visitors can also enjoy our display of life-size papier-mâché sculptures, created by local artists Pam Thorne and Ruth Rees. These impressive works showcase the creative potential of paper and provide inspiration for guests of all ages.
Located in Wynyard on Tasmania’s scenic North West Coast, Creative Paper Tasmania is perfectly positioned for travellers exploring the region. Whether heading along the coast to Stanley and The Nut, venturing west to the Tarkine wilderness, or making your way inland to Cradle Mountain, the mill is a memorable stop along your journey.
We are conveniently located 40 minutes from the Spirit of Tasmania terminal in Devonport and only five minutes from Burnie/Wynyard Airport, making it easy to add Creative Paper Tasmania to any itinerary.
From the hands-on tour to the fascinating fibres and stunning sculptures, Creative Paper Tasmania combines creativity, sustainability, and traditional techniques in a way that continues to surprise and inspire visitors.

ABOUT CREATIVE PAPER TASMANIA
Located in Wynyard on the north west coast of Tasmania, Creative Paper Tasmania was established in the early 1990's as a unemployment support program in Burnie, where papermaker Darren Simpson learned to make paper as a teenager. Since then Darren has mastered his artistry to produce high quality papers. We have a wide range of paper from fine art paper to the more unique and unusual papers made from Roo Poo, Wombat Poo, Forest Floor, Bull dung and many others.
Creative Paper Tasmania is Australia's largest handmade paper mill, and we pride ourselves on producing papers that are made from cotton textile waste, industrial hemp fibre and incorporating a range of plant fibres.
We are community focused and work alongside other local businesses and artists to provide a more eco friendly product.
